Self-assessment is the most critical and may be the most biased thing. Moreover, we may indulge in wrong perceptions while judging ourselves by looking into our own mirror. Sometimes we overrate ourselves, and sometimes we underrate ourselves. Education and skills not only add value to us, but also create boosts and ergotisms. Bedsides, some people also underrate themselves while comparing themselves to others who are merely in a batter position to them.
In a hadith, Rasul (s.m.) says, "Believes (Muslims) are mirrors one to another. A man cannot see his own nose without a mirror; hence, the other Muslim will act as a mirror to his fellow brother, he will give him positive feedback and corrections as though he can rectify his mistakes" (Tirmizi). But hush to today's society! If you tell somebody about one of your shortcomings or somehow it unveils, then the other will make a mountain of a mole hill, rather than giving him positive feedback or telling him what he actually is.
Notwithstanding, self-assessment is an essential thing. A man should do self-assessment as neutrally as they can and bedsides, should take regular feedback from his positive-minded friends and colleagues to know his actual positions, and then try his best to overcome his shortcomings to improve himself. It may be the best way to keep someone in stable development and walk way forward. Otherwise, he will be very backdated by the evolution of time and tide in this ever-changing and competitive era, or a wrong perception will grow among him about his competencies, skills etc which may lead him to a worse consequence.
